Being a Parent Can Be Tough

Some thoughts on parenting from those wiser than I.

Being a parent is a difficult job, and one from which we never really get to retire.  Despite its importance, there is no formal training any of us receive about what it means to lead a family.  I have found guidance, affirmation and an occasional chuckle in the words of others, and thought I would share a few comments I have collected over the  years.  Some have become a part of my own strategies in dealing with my children, or even understanding what my parents are doing for me. What are your own favorites?  I’d love to hear from you.

Having children makes you no more a parent than having a piano makes you a pianist

- Michael Levine

There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots, the other, wings

- Hodding Carter

A mother understands what a child does not say

- Jewish Proverb

Never fear spoiling children by making them too happy. Happiness is the atmosphere in which all good affections grow

- Thomas Bray

I have found the best way to give advice to your children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it

- Harry S. Truman

I talk and talk and talk, and I haven't taught people in 50 years what my father taught by example in one week

- Mario Cuomo

Your children need your presence more than your presents

- Jesse Jackson

We are apt to forget that children watch examples better than they listen to preaching

- Roy L. Smith

My father didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it

- Clarence Budinton Kelland

There is always a moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in

- Graham Green

The most important thing that parents can teach their children is how to get along without them

- Frank A. Clark

All children behave as well as they are treated

- Anonymous

Life affords no greater responsibility, no greater privilege, than the raising of the next generation

- C. Everett Koop

To understand your parents' love you must raise children yourself
